This is another assignment from my composition class, the final one of the semester.
Program notes:
От Зелёного Чувства (From a Green Feeling) is a journey after some emotional event has occurred. A green feeling isn’t any one emotion in particular, but a difficult-to-describe sensation that can move through bouts of tension but also tenderness. The violin and cello, much like the aftermath of this green feeling, can constructively and destructively interfere with each other, producing occasional bouts of positivity or negativity. Dissonance may not always resolve and consonance may present itself unexpectedly.
Our instructions were to write a duet for strings to explore counterpoint. The structure of the piece was to be abcba. We needed at least one section that had imitative counterpoint, a section that had non-imitative counterpoint, a section where we used an asymmetric meter, and two sections where we explored a non-diatonic scale.
I wrote my piece for a violin and cello. I make heavy use of the g minor and c minor scales, hexatonic scale (the all-combinatory hexachord), and a couple octatonic scales. I'm very proud of my counterpoint and the tone colors that I created. I also really like my use of a mix of traditional harmony as well as incorporating things such as polymodality and such throughout the piece. I hope you all enjoy!
