Frontier (Elite2) intro, "DOSBox ECE" with MT32 emulation
Frontier intro (and sound selection screen)
Almost 25 years i was playing Frontier with a wrong sounding score for the game. Which means usally you and i played it with Adlib sound selection. That is because the MS Midi Mapper uses a GM instrument set and didn't respects sysex instructions to patch the instruments. Now there is "Munt" which helps a lot to have the proper sound for a couple of games from this era, it not only paches the instruments it also understands the programming of the MT32 which enables the SFX on a real MT32. In other words the games will now sound with "Munt" like they supposed to. For Frontier (and further on) i used the "native" support for MT32 of "DOSBox ECE" (enhanced community edition).
Enjoy it, i will soon attach a link where you can download the whole project for "Frontier" including many collected goodies all nicely arranged and setup to run even from an USB stick.
I'm not sure if i will include the game but there are many sites where you can download the shareware version of Frontier. To "install" it you just have to extract the games content to the appropriate directory.
A few by me known games which use the MT32:
Frontier
Lotus Ultimate Challenge
Wing Commander
F1GP (not yet confirmed, but it uses programmed midi SFX)
and for sure a lot more from the era '88 to '93.
(i was an Amiga user from '90 to '98, so i won't know many)
If you ever though "this music sounds shit" then this was the reason, played back on an emulated MT32 they sound super.
