Nintendo has announced what it describes as the final update to Super Mario Maker 2, and it comes with a huge new feature: a World Maker mode that lets you design a map and string multiple courses together, Super Mario World-style. Each world can contain up to five levels, meaning you can create your own Mario game.

The update also includes the addition of several new enemies and power-ups including the frog suit from Super Mario Bros. 3, the power balloon from Super Mario World, and a mushroom that turns characters into their Super Mario Bros. 2 sprites and lets them throw items around.

Final ‘major’ update for Super Mario Maker 2 coming April 22.

Don’t get too excited about the Super Mario Bros. 2 additions, however. They’re limited to a new mushroom power-up that will let Mario look and behave as he did in the NES sequel and new enemy. After using the SMB 2 Mushroom, Mario can stand on enemies (without stomping them), and pull up and throw items and enemies.

Nintendo is also adding the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3, the Power Balloon from Super Mario World, the Super Acorn from New Super Mario Bros. U, and the Boomerang Flower from Super Mario 3D Land to Super Mario Maker 2’s list of power-ups. Also new are the Cannon Box, Propellor Box, Red POW Box, Goomba Mask, and Bullet Bill Mask, which are only compatible with Super Mario 3D World-style levels.

New enemies are coming too: the Koopalings, the terrifying Phanto from Super Mario Bros. 2, and a variety of Mechakoopas.

Super Mario Maker 2’s World Maker mode will finally let level designers create full worlds, stitching together individual levels on a top-down map with a variety of themes. Toad houses with minigames.
