Gal Costa has died
Gal Costa, a well-known Brazilian singer who was a key player in the Tropicália movement of the 1960s, passed away on Wednesday, according to her public relations firm. She was 77.
No immediate explanation for the death was given. The So Paulo-based singer recently postponed a performance at a nearby music festival on the suggestion of her physician following surgery to remove a nodule from her right nasal cavity in September.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the freshly elected president of Brazil, shared a photo of him and Costa cuddling on Instagram. Costa is “one of the best singers in the world, one of our foremost artists who brought the name and sounds of Brazil to the entire planet”, he said along with the photo. “The country ... lost one of its great voices today.”
