Galaxian 3 (PS1) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
165A playthrough of Namco's 1996 arcade FMV rail shooter for the Sony PlayStation, Galaxian 3.
Galaxian 3 (PS version released in English only in PAL territories) was a 1990 "attraction" that was turned into a standard game running on some seriously beefy hardware. Running multiple System 21 boards and laserdisc drives, it was a technological achievement. The biggest draw was the display: the entire game ran as an FMV movie with real-time rendered polygon-based enemies superimposed over top of it. The display was actually 2 monitors wide, and ran two separate video feeds synced together to create the effect. The processing power making this possible was not easily come by in the early 90s, and as a result the game was hellaciously expensive to manufacture and maintain. This port features both the original Project Dragoon as well as a new semi-sequel story, The Rising of Gourb, and at a video quality that's fairly comparable to the original (despite the much lower resolution used to accommodate a two-screen display on a TV) thanks to the power behind the PS1. Both are played in this video.
This version for the PS1 retains this feature with a "wide-mode" to keep things as close as possible by lining up the video feeds recorded from the two Laserdisc feeds. It works out pretty well (especially in the PAL version, which saw some upgrades from the 1995 Japanese release). Since the console version is formatted for a standard 4:3 screen through heavy pillar-boxing, I've scaled the video to make better use of the default YouTube 16:9 aspect ratio. I do apologize for the sound quality. I've added a pretty massive amount of reverb to the audio - the (unaltered) in-game voices and music are much clearer, but YT outright blocked the video when I first uploaded this the original audio intact. I thought that the edit was a better alternative than flat out muting it, but if you disagree, you're quite welcome to hit your own mute button.
There isn't much to say about the game itself. It's an FMV rail shooter. It looks and sounds great, consumes quarters like Trump consumes souls, and while it's quite fun, it doesn't last long before you've seen it all. It is an excellent port, though, with surprisingly few compromises made in bringing it to the home system. If you like Starblade Alpha, Silpheed, Corpse Killer, or Chaos Control, you'll find more of the same here.
