Why hello you lovely little peppercorns, my name's Noa Lee and Gaming Addiction, or Gaming Disorder, has been making the rounds pretty frequently over the past year or so due in part to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) decision to include “Gaming Disorder” as an actual disease in the most recent version of the ICD-11 and the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) consideration of adding “Internet Gaming Disorder” to the upcoming edition of the DSM-V.
However, what I think these organizations and a myriad of news media outlets miss is the fact that excessive gaming habits are almost always a symptom of a larger mental health issue such as anxiety, depression, OCD, autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, etc. and that by labeling this symptom as a stand-alone disease called gaming addiction we’re only ignoring a mental health crisis in western culture and harming those who could otherwise be helped, while wrongly labeling those with excessive gaming habits that do not impact their lives as “addicts.”
That said, I do believe that it is possible to have one’s gaming habits get out of hand to the point that they can negatively affect one’s life, but this is not the same as a physical addiction as I’ll explain in the video. The hard truth of the matter is that "Gaming Addiction,” as it’s often labeled, is no different from any other pleasurable activity that gets out of hand.
For example, excessive reading, excessive TV and movie watching, and even excessive exercising or working could be a symptom of the exact same mental health issues yet neither the APA nor the WHO recognize any of them as a potential “addiction” because these are all activities that are more socially acceptable than video games.
At the end of the day, gaming disorder/video game addiction is just another way those outside of the culture and industry demonize video games as a literary medium as well as those who play them. It’s footing the bill of a larger mental health issue, and you shouldn’t buy into controversy surrounding it because gaming addiction isn’t real.
