Why hello you lovely little peppercorns, my name's Noa Lee and in this Spyro 2 review I’ll be discussing game design choices and how Insomniac Games changed the formula from Spyro the Dragon. Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage was Insomniac Games’ second attempt at the 3D platformer genre. In it you play as the titular Spyro the Dragon as he jumps, glides, charges, and breathes fire while taking on new foes, new villains, and a bunch of new mini games. And while this game is very much a continuation of the original Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2 may actually take the series in a new, albeit subtle, direction leaving me to wonder: does Ripto's Rage actually improve on the original's gameplay, or is it actually a step back? What has changed between the two games, and does it hold up as well as its predecessor? I hope to answer that very question in this Spyro 2 review.
Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage was released in November of 1999 and is cited by many critics as the best entry in the entire series, while many other Spyro 2 review's see it as a crucial stepping stone to what they consider to be the best Spyro game: Spyro: Year of the Dragon. Whatever the case, there's no denying just how impactful and meaningful this game has been to an entire generation of gamers, which is why I think it's so important to look back on this work of art and appreciate both the missteps and strides that it made.
