그랜트

가로우 마크 오브 더 울브스의 중간 보스이자 페이크 최종 보스. 전용테마는 Destruction Maniac.

파멸의 상징으로 외경시되는 사우스타운 암흑계의 절대자. 준결승전 이후에 난입한다. 암흑공수도를 극한까지 단련하여 일류의 격투가조차도 능가하는 힘을 지녔다. 그 파괴력이 마치 악마와도 같아서 두려움의 대상이 되고 있다. 무엇보다도 싸움을 좋아하며 동시에 약자를 경멸하는 모습을 보인다.

본 게임의 진 최종 보스인 카인 R. 하인라인과는 죽마고우로 사우스타운 빈민가에서 함께 성장한 둘도 없는 친우. 카인의 누나(락 하워드의 어머니)와의 기억도 공유하고 있다. 카인이 자신의 손으로 기스 하워드의 계획을 이루어 진정한 약육강식의 세계를 만들겠다는 의지를 보인 뒤로는 그를 향한 절대적인 신뢰와 충성을 보이고 있다.

약자를 경멸하기는 하지만 그래도 근본은 좋은 인간인지라 호쿠토마루와 싸울 때도 큰 위해를 가하지 않고 봐주었으며 호쿠토마루도 "꼭 사부님 같아..."라고 말했다. 어려워하는 곳이 습기찬 곳인 것은, 도자기를 만들기 어렵기 때문이라고 한다. 특징은 남들보다 월등히 큰 체격과 언제나 쓰고 다니는 붉은 가면.

예전에 카인을 보호하다가 맞은 총탄이 서서히 심장에 다가가고 있는지라 건강 상태가 몹시 좋지 않아 살날이 얼마 남지 않았다. 길어봤자 4년 정도. 그랜트나 카인이 아닌 다른 캐릭터로 그랜트를 쓰러뜨리면 총탄이 심장에 완전히 박혀 사망해버린다. 그럼에도 카인에게는 그 사실을 숨긴 채 그를 위해 몸을 내던져 일선에서 뛰고 있다. 그러나 카인의 엔딩에서는 카인이 이미 그런 사실을 알고 있다는 말이 나온다.

카인과의 사이가 무언가 쿨하면서도 가슴 뜨거워 많은 사람의 심금을 울렸다. 그랜트가 카인을 보호하려다가 총을 대신 맞은 적이 있는데, 심장 주변에 총알이 박힌 탓에 그의 수명이 얼마 남지 않았다는 걸 알고 카인이 진심으로 슬퍼하는 장면도 나온다. 그랜트의 본명이 아벨이므로 카인과 합치면 구약성서에 등장하는 카인과 아벨이 된다. 구약성서의 카인과 아벨과 마찬가지로 아벨이 단명하는 원인이 카인에게 있는데, 둘의 사이가 썩 좋지않은 구약성서와는 정 반대로 둘의 사이는 굳건하다는 점이 특이하다.

선택법은 캐릭터 선택창에서 동환에 커서를 맞춘 후 스타트 버튼을 누르며 ↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ↑ ↓ 를 순서대로 입력하면 된다.


성능

게임 내의 성능은 강하지만 사용법이 어렵다 정도. 기본기와 필살기 하나하나의 판정과 대미지가 굉장히 좋다. 대공기 흉조인(→↓↘+A or C)과 초필살기 마신파천탄(↓↘→↓↘→+A or C)의 대공 처리가 좋고, 돌진기 호탄핵(↓↘→+B or D)도 성능이 뛰어나 하수에게는 호탄핵만 난발해도 괜찮을 정도. 하지만 대부분의 기술이 연계가 제대로 이루어지지 않아 사용법이 굉장히 까다롭다. 캔슬 가능한 기본기는 오직 상단 회피 공격 하나뿐 연속기는 거의 강제연결로 써야할 정도로, 주력인 약P 연타 - 마신원월륜(↓→↘↓↘→+B or D)도 강제연결이다. 대회에서 그랜트 플레이어가 그리 많지 않은 것도 이 때문이다. 초필살기 마신원월륜과 마신파천탄은 둘 다 강력하면서 연출도 멋지니 볼 기회가 있다면 한 번 보도록 하자.

프로토 타입 시절에는 마벽(프로토 타입 당시의 커맨드는 → + C)이라는 특수기로 악명을 떨쳤는데 이 특수기를 사용한 후에 다른 필살기, 초필살기로 캔슬이 가능해서 구석에서 흉조인을 맞추고 브레이크만 해도 마벽 → 강 호탄핵 → 마벽 → 강 호탄핵(반복)이라는 초딩급 무한이 가능하다. SNK도 이걸 심각하게 생각했는지 커맨드를 '↘ + C'로 바꾸고 캔슬이 불가능하게 바꾸면서 후 딜레이를 줄임으로 이 특수기는 평범한 특수기로 전락했다. 그래도 줄어든 후딜 덕분에 구석에서 흉조인 카운터가 터졌을 때 브레이크를 쓰고 이 특수기를 쓰면 5번 우겨넣을 수 있어서 쓸 구석은 있다.

CPU 버전은 플레이어블 버전과 캐릭터 컬러가 약간 다르다. 즉, CPU 버전은 매우 선명한 빨간색인데 반해 플레이어블 버전은 약간 칙칙한 빨간색이다. 또한 흉조인과 마신파천탄에 무적 시간이 추가되었으며 등장 모션도 살짝 차이가 있다.


Grant

Grant (グラント, Guranto), whose true name is Abel Cameron, is a character in the Fatal Fury series. He is the sub boss of Garou: Mark of the Wolves; if the player hasn't met the conditions to fight Kain, he will be the final boss for the game's bad ending. Kain and Grant, while not brothers, were inspired by the Biblical Cain and Abel. He is voiced by Yō Kitazawa.


Story

Grant is an old friend of Kain and Marie Heinlein. He protected the siblings from the dangers of the slums under his real name Abel. When Marie was sent away to live a life of luxury, he chose to stay with Kain and watch over the boy as his father figure. Nineteen years before the game begins, Kain had enough of the slums and declared his ambitions for power. Determined to not abandon him, he also invited Abel to join him. Abel agreed and took on the name Grant from then on. They work well together as they share the same vision of greatness. Grant had also made a deal with a dark entity in order to gain the power of Ankoku Karate (Dark Karate), for which he trains in his temple underneath his mansion.

Under his new persona, Grant's duty to Kain was to eliminate any intruder or conspirators against them. He has killed many men during Kain's rise to power, eventually choosing to work in the shadows until he is needed. Four years before the game begins, Grant shielded Kain from a gunshot and the bullet was lodged near his heart. Since the bullet is difficult to remove, Grant lives everyday as his last and wishes for a great final battle.

When the "King of Fighters: Maximum Mayhem" tournament takes place, his job is to lure strong opponents to his lair and defeat them before they reach Kain. In his ending, he helps Kain find and subdue the remaining kingpins in Second Southtown.


Personality

Grant is an unmovable and unmerciful giant. He is calm and composed at all times, praising anyone who has the bravery to face him. He honors his history with Kain and will work for him until the end.

◾Seismic Wave - Grant can topple his foes by generating a seismic wave.

◾Slashing Aura - Grant can create a slashing aura around his legs.

Fighting Style

Grant is a power character with strong physical attack attributes. His normal attacks have long range and his special moves will take off a sizable chunk of the enemy's lifebar. In terms of his karate-style, he utilizes a focused-stance with a variety of ki-based attacks and with sudden bursts of speed.
