The Geekom XT13 Pro was introduced in the summer of 2024. This compact computer, smaller than the Mac Mini, offers a number of features that might be more appealing to everyday consumers than Apple's competing device. While Apple’s traditional October event for new hardware was skipped, the Chinese tech market continues to release new models at an incredible pace. This has its advantages: older models, such as the XT13 Pro, have improved through BIOS updates and driver fine-tuning, making them even more reliable over time.

Despite the higher price of the Mac Mini, the XT13 Pro from Geekom offers a simpler and more user-friendly experience. Instead of numerous USB ports, the XT13 Pro comes equipped with two HDMI ports, a connection option that most people still have the appropriate cables for at home. Geekom even includes an HDMI cable with the device. The Chinese manufacturer has clearly prioritized everyday convenience for users. For example, the front of the XT13 Pro features two USB-A ports, whereas Apple only includes a status LED on the front of its Mac Mini. This diverse range of ports is particularly useful for those who frequently plug in USB drives or connect their iPhones, as users won’t have to fumble around the back of the device to access the ports. In contrast, Apple’s decision to place the headphone jack on the back of the Mac Mini seems less practical for wired headphone users. The XT13 Pro, on the other hand, includes a headphone jack on the front. While wireless headphones have become more common, many users in 2024 still rely on wired EarPods.

Apple's pricing strategy has long been a topic of debate. For example, a Mac Mini with 32GB of RAM and 2TB of storage costs a hefty €2,699. In contrast, the XT13 Pro is equipped with a fast Acer SSD, boasting a write speed of 7099.31 MB/s, demonstrating that this machine doesn't lag behind in performance. The one thing the XT13 Pro can’t do out of the box, however, is run macOS. This mini-PC is powered by an Intel Core i9-13900H processor and comes with Windows 11 Pro, though it’s also compatible with Linux. I’m even considering revisiting the concept of building a Hackintosh—a custom-built machine that can run macOS—in order to avoid the steep cost of a new Mac Mini.

The XT13 Pro comes in two variants. The version with an Intel i9 processor is currently available from Geekom for €999. A leftover promo code from the launch, “GEEKOMXT13,” reduces the price to €849, making it about €5 cheaper than it was in the summer. For those who need less storage, there’s an i7 version available. Using the same launch coupon, this model is priced at €599. It offers the same 32GB of RAM but only 1TB of SSD storage. In comparison, the base version of the Mac Mini, which costs €699, comes with just 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. In terms of price-to-performance, the Geekom XT13 Pro is the clear winner.

With its competitive pricing, user-friendly features, and focus on convenience, the XT13 Pro stands out as a powerful alternative to the Mac Mini, especially for those who don't require Apple's ecosystem. It’s a solid option for tech enthusiasts and everyday users alike, delivering top-tier performance at a fraction of the cost of Apple's offering.
