Gekitou Power Modeler/Power Quest intros
Back in 1998, Capcom published a little Game Boy fighting game called Gekitou Power Modeler in Japan. It was developed by Japan System Supply, which went on to create the Chameleon Twist games. However, a mere month after the Japanese release, Sunsoft got the rights to release GPM in North America, calling it Power Quest.
GPM/Power Quest is about your main character (who is unnamed) entering a series of tournaments centered around battling tiny robots. At first, your robot is limited in the moves they can use. As you progress through the story, you gain Zenny (typical Capcom currency) to buy new moves for your robots.
There are six robots in all, ranging from all-rounder Max to big, clunky Borot.
There are several differences between the English and Japanese versions of the game. One is that Gekitou Power Modeler uses a battery to save progress in the story mode. Power Quest uses passwords. It's also a monochrome game, as opposed to Power Quest being a GBC-enabled game that plays in full color (it's on a black cartridge and can also be played in monochrome).
Power Modeler also has the Capcom logo and jingle in the beginning. Capcom, for some reason, didn't credit Japan System Supply for the game in any way. However, Sunsoft did when localizing the game as Power Quest. The intro for GPM is front and center, whereas IIRC the intro in Power Quest doesn't play until a few demos have gone by. PQ has a language select, GPM doesn't.
1P vs. mode is also accessed with a code in GPM. Power Quest has this unlocked by default. This is likely so that players who just want to pick up and play can; PQ's use of passwords makes jumping into battle right away kind of difficult. Borot is locked in GPM whereas PQ has him unlocked already. I always thought this was weird since Borot is the defacto joke character of the game...
Another small but very understandable change is that in GPM's story mode, when the main character goes to the model shop to get a robot, the Zenny amount is listed next to each one (they're all 50,000 Zenny each), but he has a gift coupon to get one for free. In PQ, the Zenny amount for the robots is not listed.
All in all, GPM/PQ is a pretty decent fighting game, and is basically Street Fighter Alpha with robots; it was a nice stand-in for that game until Crawfish released a version of SFA on Game Boy Color....
