Genji is an offensive hero that excels in melee combat. He is most effective when flanking enemies and taking alternate routes to get to an objective. His passive ability, Cyber Agility, aids him in this by allowing him to climb walls and double jump. This can help him get to unique places to gain an advantage over the enemy.
Genji’s main attack is throwing his Shuriken at enemies. He can either fire three in quick succession, or throw them all at once in a fanned out horizontal line. The horizontal spread is better for close up targets or multiple enemies, and it can be fired more rapidly than the straight line. His shurikens do not have an arced path, so they can be useful for taking out Bastion sentries and Turrets.
Deflect is a unique ability which allows Genji to return enemy fire back towards an opponent. The deflected shots will go in the direction of his crosshair, so try to aim at an enemy’s head for full effect as they can also count as a headshot. That this ability does not work on channeled attacks such as Mei’s frost stream or Symmetra’s Photon Projector beam. Don’t be afraid to use this ability simply to reduce your incoming damage, but when used on things like Mei’s blizzard drone, this ability can change the course of the battle.
When Swift Strike is activated, Genji will dash forward and strike enemies in his path. If you manage to kill an opponent with this attack, the ability’s cooldown will be reset. He can also use it for mobility purposes - by darting in and out of combat or to break through defenses and shields. An important tactic to note, is that if you use Genji’s melee attack first, Swift Strike will interrupt the animation and allow for a quick attack.
Genji’s ultimate, Dragonblade, empowers his katana to deliver killing strikes for a short period of time. During this ability, he can still use Swift Strike and Deflect, but cannot throw shurikens. It will also reset the cooldown of Swift Strike upon activation, but it is a high risk high reward ultimate as he remains vulnerable for it’s duration.
Genji is a great counter to heroes such as Widowmaker and Bastion, as they can often be found alone and due to his maneuverability he can flank them unexpectedly. You will easily kill Bastion by using deflect on his sentry fire. Mercy is basically animal fodder to Genji because he can usually reach her with his parkour abilities and take her out in an instant. Be aware of Mei as it’s difficult to reach her without getting frozen, and she can use Cyro Freeze to escape your ultimate. Heroes like Lucio and Tracer can also pose a problem due to their high mobility.
