Möllemann died aged 57. He was forced to resign as Vice-Chancellor in 1993 after just 9 months following a scandal involving the use of ministry letter-heading to push a relative's plastic chip-card invention. He had been called an anti-semite because of his critiques of Israel and it was insinuated that at least some of this was due to his close ties with Arab Business interests.
