“A Punchup At a Wedding” was largely inspired by an extremely negative review of Radiohead's July 7th 2001 gig in their hometown Oxford. The reviewer apparently lambasted the crowd and the review upset Thom especially, because that show had been one of the truly great moments for the band. Yorke said the performance was "one of the biggest days in my life", and that "I just didn't understand why... how someone, just because they had access to a keyboard and a typewriter, could just totally write off an event that meant an awful lot to an awful lot of people." The memory of the event was thoroughly ruined for Yorke by the reviewer, hence lines like "you had to piss on our parade/you had to shred our big day".

The song went through numerous drafts and was performed live before release with slightly different lyrics at least 3 times.

Radiohead have criticized Hail to the Thief. In 2006,Yorke said in an interview "I'd maybe change the playlist. I think we had a meltdown when we put it together ... We wanted to do things quickly, and I think the songs suffered." In 2008, Yorke posted an alternative track listing on Radiohead's website, omitting "Backdrifts", "We Suck Young Blood", "I Will" and "A Punchup at a Wedding".
