Here, I show you how to obtain brown wool in Beta 1.2 by exploiting a glitch found in an old Infdev version. This doesn't require any external programs (although MCEdit helps) and I personally wouldn't consider it cheating (at least the bad kind) since the block is unobtainable otherwise. It consists of opening your world's seed in Infdev 20100327, performing the block transmutation glitch, copying over the infdev chunks into your Beta world, and then finding that your placed wool has magically become brown when you load the world in Beta 1.2.

Cocoa beans were only added to dungeon chests (and brown sheep began spawning naturally) in Beta 1.4, which means before that, this is the only way to get brown wool without editing your inventory directly.

Many thanks to /u/DeadlyDirtBlock for letting me know about this glitch: https://www.reddit.com/r/GoldenAgeMinecraft/comments/18x3oi9/comment/kg23vvy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3

Here's the article that describes the glitch: https://mcdf.wiki.gg/wiki/Java_Edition:Block_Transmutation#Preserved_Data_Value_Transmutation

And here's the article that instructs you on how to determine where chunks are stored in your world directory (if you don't want to use MCEdit): https://minecraft.wiki/w/Java_Edition_Alpha_level_format

Final notes:
- Why did I bother using infdev20100630, rather than just going straight to infdev20100327? Because the latter's terrain generation is different from that of infdev20100630 up to Alpha 1.1.2_01. The chunks I was on in my Beta world were originally generated in Alpha 1.0.17_04, so I wanted the terrain generation to match. However, directly porting over my Beta world to infdev20100327 caused it to crash.
- Following on from the above, you're free to just skip straight to using infdev20100327, although you will create noticeable chunk borders
- When I open the world in MCEdit, the wool already shows up as brown because MCEdit is using the post-infdev block ID to block texture mappings. If you see a different color, it's because you did not use the flint and steel the correct number of times.
- At 5:34, I meant to say "Chunk Control," not "Version Control"
- I experienced a lot of crashes on world-load in infdev when using MultiMC. BetaCraft fixed these errors
- As far as I know (and I searched far and wide), this is the first ever case of brown wool being obtained in vanilla Beta 1.2 / 1.3 without using inventory editing programs (cheating). Therefore, my clickbait thumbnail is permissible :)
- Do this at your own risk
