Ghoul School (NES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Electro Brain's 1992 NES game, Ghoul School.
Ghoul School is an NES entry in the genre that we now tend to refer as Metroidvania. It's open and non-linear, with your grungy looking early 90s 'punk' kid running through his high school, looking for power ups and weapons that'll allow you to reach previously inaccessible places. It's almost Castlevania II: Simon's Quest with the whole horror-platformer shtick, just missing Dracula and the whole ass-backwards medieval Europe motif.
It's not quite as awesome as Castlevania, Metroid, Faxanadu, Battle of Olympus, Goonies II, et al, but it does its job well enough to be fun once you get used to the super stiff controls.
And if you hear Bart vs. the Space Mutant sound effects, that's because those sounds tended to get used across most of Imagineering's NES game. Look at the credits and you're sure to see some familiar names.
