Sunset Riders (SNES) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
455A beginning to end playthrough of Konami's 1993 SNES game, Sunset Riders.
Played through on hard with Bob.
Sunset Riders has always held a pretty special place in my gaming "landscape" if you will. I remember being about 10 playing this endlessly at the Navy Exchange's game room while my parents were in the store doing their shopping, and I got REALLY good at it after a few weekly visits with a fist-full of quarters each time. I was absolutely ecstatic when I read that it was coming out on the SNES. Unfortunately, we could never find it at a store, but I did rent that game over and over and over when Hollywood Video finally got a copy of it!
The graphics and sound are absolutely amazing (This soundtrack! Holy hell is it epic!), and the overall presentation isn't far from the quality of the original 1991 arcade version's: the overall care and quality apparent throughout is pretty comparable to that of the Turtles in Time SNES port. I really can't imagine any higher praise I can give it than that - it even retains the animated arcade intro cinema!
The controls are near flawless (and really one-up the arcade controls with a button dedicated to sliding), and the difficulty is pitch perfect for each skill level. Really, the only issues that in my mind can be honestly leveled at the SNES's Sunset Riders are the cuts made for censorship (almost all of the speech is there - it has just been edited to be made less offensive per Nintendo guidelines, much like the fairly pervasive sprite alterations), and while all of the stages and bosses are present (not at all like the Genesis's Frankensteined mess-of-a-port) some of the arcade game's levels have been cut down pretty heavily.
Either way, this is easily the best version of this fantastic game outside of finding a dedicated cabinet (or playing it on MAME, which in the early 90s was obviously not an option). If you've never played it, can you really call yourself a Konami fan? Or a fan of SNES action games, for that matter?
