The Giant Octopus was built in 1961 by Hayes Fabrication of Warwick (who also made the Skid and the Austin Cars); it's an English machine based on American 1935 Lusse design. As the name suggests, a number of arms swing round a central post, rising and falling as they go. On the end of each arm is a pod which can turn a stomach-churning 360º. Imagine how thrilling this must have been in 1935! Despite its age, still has the same effect now, even with today's world-weary teenagers.
