The GNOME developers have recently published the release schedule, and in it, GNOME 42 will be released on March 23, 2022.
While some of you are still waiting for GNOME 41 to arrive in the stable software repositories of your favorite Linux distributions, work has begun on the next big release of the popular desktop environment, GNOME 42.
GNOME 42 will be released on March 23, 2022
The GNOME developers have recently published the release schedule for the GNOME 42 desktop environment, scheduled for release next year on March 23rd. It will be the second major update to the GNOME 4x series and development has started slowly this month.
GNOME 42 will follow the same routine as the GNOME 40 and GNOME 41 development cycles, which means that public testers will be able to complete the Alpha, Beta and Release Candidate (RC) milestones for a test drive on their personal computers.
That said, here is the official GNOME 42 release schedule:
GNOME 42 Alpha – January 8, 2022
GNOME 42 Beta – February 12, 2022
GNOME 42 RC – March 5, 2022
GNOME 42 Final – March 23, 2022
Therefore, GNOME developers have about three months to implement new features before we can get our hands on the first development release, the Alpha version.
The UI (interface) Freeze stage is set after the Beta release in mid-February, which means no significant UI changes will be made.
Meanwhile, GNOME developers and users will be able to participate in another important event, the GNOME Asia Summit 2021 , which will take place online this coming November 20-21.
As for the new features in GNOME 42, there will be a system-wide dark style preference similar to what we can currently experience on Android, macOS, iOS, and other modern operating systems.
As you might have guessed, there will be an option in Settings or GNOME Shell to quickly turn light/dark mode on or off.
In addition, the new system-wide dark style preference will support day/night scheduling with automatic wallpaper sync, but the developers have noted the fact that this feature will not be enforced across all apps.
As you can imagine, it's too early to talk about new features in the next release, but rest assured you'll be the first to know what's new in the GNOME 42 desktop environment as more details become available until the final release arrives. to the streets on March 23, 2022.
In the meantime, if you are using GNOME versions 40 or 41, be sure to keep them up to date with the latest maintenance updates.
GNOME 40.6 and GNOME 41.1 are slated for late October and should hit your favorite Linux distributions in early November.
:: More ::
The core and first-party applications will have to support the dark style preference before GNOME 42 release to kick things off.
While third-party developers should also get on the bandwagon, given the difference this makes, it would take time for all your essential/favorite tools to support it.
