It hasn’t been that long since GNOME 42 was released.
While it was an exciting upgrade over GNOME 41, you may not be able to find it on every mainstream Linux distribution (except OpenSUSE, Arch, and Clear Linux).
Fedora 36 and Ubuntu 22.04 should be the most popular options featuring GNOME 42 with their releases in the following weeks.
:: More ::
At the end of last month, my colleague Diego explained, for those who did not know, what is the GNOME desktop. just one day before threw GNOME 42, a new version that introduced very interesting new features, and among which I have a favorite: the screenshot tool. With that release already delivered, they have already got down to work and have begun to develop GNOME 43, of which some details are already known.
The first thing that strikes me is that Nautilus will be "Adaptive", which I would better translate as responsive. And it is that this novelty of the GNOME file manager is designed to make it look better on mobile phones, and this is known as responsive design on the web. It may not be exactly the same, but I couldn't stop thinking about it. This design is a major change, especially for Phosh users.
GNOME 43 will arrive in September
In GNOME 43 there will be a API to recolor, which is intended more for developers than for users. Developers using this API will be able to change the colors of their applications and have automatic dependent color updates. They will also be able to create presets that can be used, for example, to recolor a window based on the view's color scheme.
Coming back to us, the users, to what we can use or see, GNOME 43 will introduce the option to change accent color, something that can be done in Ubuntu 20.04 even if it is in GNOME 42. This is so because it is something that depends on libadwaita, and Canonical has gone ahead.
They will also introduce a new image viewer called Loupe, which will be responsive, and annotations in the capture tool of screen. So that flagship feature that is already available in v42 will be even better in GNOME 43.
New design for disk usage analyzer
The disk usage analysis tool is now written in Vala, and the next one will be in Rust. You may not notice an improvement in the short term, but it will set things up to move forward in the future. For everything else, and although there are more details in a project notelittle else is known. They will publish more information in the coming months, until September, when it is expected to be released GNOME 43.
