INTRODUCTION (From the manual):
The aim of the game is to rescue a person you told to go to Hell. To do this you must drive him through a huge maze in order to collect six crosses, then make your way to the hidden room and meet the master of Hell. There're lots of badies everywhere: shooting your small white crosses at them will increase your energy a little. You can fully recover your energy level by placing yourself on the special flashy crosses.
REVIEW:
This game is from 1985, a looong time before games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill did see the light of day. There had been other attempts of making horror games, e.g. Evil Dead and Alien, but nothing like this had ever been made on any system before.
In this game you are in hell and you will see see people being sawn up, having their heads crushed, being stretched on racks, and many more weird things while you are wandering around in a big maze trying to find the six crosses you need.
You will need a map for this game, else it is impossible to find the crosses and the entrance to the master of hell: http://www.worldofspectrum.org/pub/sinclair/games-maps/g/GoToHell_2.png
You will be attacked by a lot of creatures and to defend yourself you can throw crosses. If you get hit by a creature or their shots you will lose energy, and you will also lose energy if you walk into the spider’s web or if you touch the walls or touch anything else. Shooting creatures will recharge some of your energy, and you get full energy again every time you find one of the six crosses.
For the time being this game did it very well as a horror game, it didn’t give you jump scares, but it had the right atmosphere, and back in the days many people had to see it, just to see all the sick animations. The original release had some strange in game beeper noise going on all the time which actually fitted the game well. A creepy soundtrack had off course been better and this version has been modded by Yuvjenko V.V. / SEG that has added a soundtrack done by Phantom Lord ACP. This is really good, very well composed music for a horror game, it really gives this game the final touch of bizarreness!
Fans of horror games should definitely check this game out!
The game is made by John George Jones and published by his own company Triple Six in 1985, and he also made a sequel named Soft & Cuddly. Both games is made exclusively for the Spectrum.
