Golden Axe Warrior is an action adventure game, very much in the same genre as Zelda 1. In fact, this game doesn't even try to hide that it is a Zelda 1 clone, and it shares several characteristics of it such as going around exploring dungeons, the whole-screen scrolling, the combat, the random caves and much more. But with that said, this game is a darn good Zelda clone. It took everything Zelda 1 did, and improved on almost every aspect. The fact that the world contains villages, and villagers makes the world feel much more alive compared to how barren Zelda 1 felt. The only complaint I really got on the game is that your weapons have somewhat too short a range (similar problems as Zelda 1 actually) and that enemies aren't knocked back far enough from taking damage, which forces you to take a few steps back every time you damage and enemy.
This game is great, and I enjoyed (almost) every minute of it. It is just very unfortunate that the game was released when it was (in 93, same year as A Link to the Past) which probably caused it to not get the attention it deserved. Because this is a very well executed adventure game, and one I could probably play again sometime.
