Golvellius: Valley of Doom Game Sample - Sega Master System
Original Air Date: September 20th, 2009
This is probably the last SMS title I'm doing for the time being. The Sega Master System gets a slice of more Zelda-esque action with this title. Titled Maou Golvellius in Japan, this game is based off of the MSX original simply titled Golvellius. It would receive one more little-known remake in the form of Shin Maou Golvellius, which was only released in Japan for MSX. The kingdom of Aleid is in need of water that they get from the neighboring valley, but the valley has become infested with demons. The king of Aleid is so worried by this turn of events that he becomes ill and needs a special herb known as "Mea" to be cured. The problem is this herb is also in the valley.
The king's daughter, Princess Rena, went to find the herb despite all objections, and has failed to return from the valley. Fear and unrest from the townsfolk continued to grow. Out of nowhere, an unarmed wandering youth named Kelesis went down into the valley depths to search for Rena and found a mysterious cave in the dying valley river. It's there that he meets a kind old woman who prepares him for his journey.
The gameplay is relatively simple and repetitive, but there a few different play styles present in this game, from side-scrolling portions, to top-down portions where you explore, to scrolling top-down portions. You can buy several items through the course of the game and find many holes where people have valuable information (sometimes). The visuals are pretty good and the music is what you'd come to expect from Compile (good). What's interesting is the imposed "Max Gold" limit which needs to be increased to make your journey more convenient. You also have numerous life bars through the use of potions. It is a competent title, though somewhat unknown and overshadowed by better SMS games. Enjoy.
