An action RPG game set in a fantasy setting, developed by the debuting German studio Piranha Bytes, founded by former members of Greenwood Entertainment, which was dynamic in the 1990s.
Gothic is an action RPG game, which is the debut project of the German studio Piranha Bytes - a team founded in 1997 by former employees of Greenwood Entertainment. In some countries, including Poland, the title in question enjoys cult status. The production gave rise to a series developed in the following years, and when the brand it represented was acquired by THQ Nordic, it also received a full-fledged remake.
Gothic takes us on a journey to the fantastic kingdom of Myrtana, specifically to the so-called Mining Valley on the island of Khorinis, where the ruler Rhobar II created a penal colony. Those incarcerated in the latter were to work hard to extract ore, and their escape from this place was to be prevented by an impenetrable magical barrier from the inside. However, the spell creating it was corrupted and as a result it covered the entire valley, imprisoning under the dome the convicts, the magicians responsible for it, as well as the ancient evil that had previously remained hidden.
During the game, we play the role of a nameless hero, whom we meet when he is thrown into a penal colony. The protagonist quickly turns out to be the chosen one of the god Innos, whose task is not to work in the mine, but to deal with the ancient threat lurking in the Mining Valley.
In Gothic, we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). An open world was created for its needs, which, although not impressive in size, boasts rich content. We will find there, among others, ancient ruins, mines, an orc village and, finally, various camps set up by convicts.
There are a number of factions in the mining valley that we can join during the game, thus influencing the course of the plot. The driving force of the story are the tasks that push it forward, accompanied by various side missions. By completing them, we travel through the Mining Valley and face numerous opponents. In addition to hostile people and orcs, our path is blocked by local fauna (such as wolves, overgrown beetles and carrion eater) and other monsters (including skeletons and demons). Depending on our playing style, during dynamic clashes we use melee weapons (from one- and two-handed swords, to axes, clubs and hammers) or ranged weapons (such as bows and crossbows), as well as magic.
As we progress, we develop the character. By gaining experience, we advance to the next levels, and the points we receive can be distributed among individual attributes or used to develop specific skills related to combat and activities useful outside the battlefield (such as lockpicking, sneaking or skinning animals). It is worth noting that, unlike in most representatives of the species, we can do this only after finding the right teacher.
In addition, we increase the combat potential of the so-called Nameless One by acquiring better and better equipment, which includes weapons and armor, as well as various artifacts. We find new items in the game world, buy them from merchants, make them ourselves or take them from defeated enemies.
Even though the graphics of Gothic can be a bit clumsy, at the time of release it looked quite solid. However, the atmospheric soundtrack, including the main theme of the title, has not aged.
Gothic has a full Polish language version. The characters were voiced by professional actors, headed by Jacek Mikołajczak, who played the role of the Nameless One. The remaining roles were played by: Tomasz Marzecki, Adam Bauman, Piotr Bąk, Paweł Iwanicki, Paweł Szczesny, Przemysław Nikiel, Jarosław Domin, Agata Gawrońska-Bauman, Jacek Kopczyński, Łukasz Nowicki, Marek Obertyn, Andrzej Tomecki, Robert Tondera, Janusz Wituch, Mirosław Zbrojewicz and Jacek Sołtysiak.
