It's been what seems like FOREVER since we've uploaded any Game Boy (Color/Super) games... which is weird cause we have tons of them. Anyway, we're gonna change that. Today's game is "Tobu Tobu Girl Deluxe". If you've never heard of this title, don't feel bad; it was never officially released back during the Game Boy's heyday. It's actually an Arcade style indie/homebrew "platforming" title that was originally released back in 2017 by "Tangram Games" for the original Game Boy, but garnered a strong cult following for its cute visuals, kinetic action, wonderful soundtrack (with professional grade GBS quality) and low low price (free). "Tobu" in this case means to jump, fly, soar, rush, or any variation thereof.

"First Press Games" (one of the current outlets in the vein of "Limited Run Games", "PCE Memories", etc.) collaborated with the creators, a primarily three-man crew (Simon Jonas Larsen, Lukas Erritsø Hansen and the highly talented "potato-tan" on music, although nearly a dozen people were involved) to make an upgraded version akin to the DX upgrades of original Game Boy games from back in the day through Kickstarter if they were successfully funded (which they were). Tobu Tobu Girl was originally conceived in 2014 and was created for the third "GBJam". The initial prototype featured a more puzzle-like design. After the game jam, the game went through several iterations gradually moving towards a more action-oriented design.

With upgraded assets, a new color pallet, a nostalgic Super Game Boy mode with its own proper color pallet compatibility and a few additional surprises, "Tobu Tobu Girl Deluxe" was born. It should be noted that what you're seeing in this video is the SGB Border combined with GBC assets. It should also be worth noting that this game is also free for gamers to load on to a Game Boy Flashcart or play in a compatible emulator, but it also has a limited physical print run for those curious (links at the bottom). It is compatible with regular Game Boy, SGB and GBC, and the full source code and assets for the game are available on GitHub under a MIT/CC-BY license.

If I had to describe the game, it's kinda like if Nintendo's "Balloon Kid" and Sega's "Angel Kids" had a baby girl, she grew into an adolescent, tied a balloon around her beloved cat for some reason and then freaked out when it flew away. Now, she has to save her cat by somehow flying through the sky while dashing, pounding enemies and flapping her arms as hard as she can to temporarily boost. There are a few Tool-Assisted Speedruns that make the game look ridiculously easy and short (three minutes or less), but it'll take some practice to actually get decent at the game -- characters have to move and dash in eight directions, stomp down on enemies to defeat them and restore your boost bar, and memorize the different obstacles and enemy traits to do well. There are four primary stages as well as an all-new "Endless" mode with each level gradually introducing new concepts to hone your skills, and players can replay stages for the best times and scores as well as unlock new features when reaching certain milestones. Players can get ranked from "C" to "S", but this is easier said than done as enemies and obstacles are randomly placed (barring the one enemy below you at the start).

The game plays fine and once you understand the mechanics, there's a degree of elegance to the gameplay as you glide through the air. It's fun while it lasts and it's totally free, but if you want to help the devs, you can go to the following links:
