In what is clearly an effort to inflict the most pain possible on myself, i've gone and done the insane thing of attempting... a recovery run against Gradius bosses.

Ignore the white bit on the right, Zsnes decided to move very slightly before I started recording, and I didn't notice untill AFTER i'd done all 3 bosses... damnit. It's been a while since i've made a stupid mistake like that.

What's a Recovery Run?:
Here's the basic idea: Get to the boss, and then die. Then beat the boss (and.. stage) with the few power-ups you get from the pre-boss checkpoint.

The hardest part about the Gradius series is, when you die, especially to one of the bosses, it's extremely difficult to continue. This is what makes the Gradius series amongst the hardest shoot em up's around.

Be sure to check out Part 1 for more insanity!

Boss Notes and Difficulty in Recovering:

Disrupt:
Stage: :'(
Talk about punishing the player for dying.
I forgot the stage did what it did, right before the boss, the first time...
I think I swore. XD
Boss: Difficult if you go about it the wrong way.
Take out the Laser turrets FIRST, they're borderline impossible to dodge with the enemies fighting you as well. Don't bother trying to destroy the cores before you take out the enemy generators. It don't work.

Shadow Dancer (Gear?):
Stage: Harder than it looks!
Those Duckers are a right pain in the ass when theres four (or more) of them. Getting the power up capsules is pretty tough.
Boss: Vertical shot FTW! This is probably the safest way to take out the boss (if you don't have many speed ups by this point, that is.)
Shooting him right in the groin too, they probably shouldn't of given it one, XD...
Just watch out for the super-sonic Ducker robots. And the legs seem to have a larger hitbox than the sprite. This is irritating.

Bacterian:
Stage: Very difficult without options. O_o The lasers help big time, because they can destroy the masses of enemies in a row.
The worst part, is of course, the Salamander regenerating walls. Go about those the wrong way and you're screwed, especially since you won't have an option to have behind you, by this point.
Boss: Oh dear. Oh dear oh dear. HARDEST BOSS EVAR!!!1!

This was fun... frustrating at times, but fun. A nice challenge. I might try this with other games in the series.
Oh hard mode of course. XP
