In this part, McGilded presses hard on the fact that Van Zieks has no proof for his claim that the crime scene was manipulated, mid-trial. Van Zieks is forced to admit he has no more witnesses or evidence. The judge and jury agree that McGilded should be found not guilty, due to a lack of conclusive evidence against him.

Ryunosuke is very disappointed that the trial must end here, as he believes the evidence in favor of McGilded's innocence is also inconclusive. He doesn't want the trial to end, before the guilty party is discovered! Sadly, the trial does end. McGilded seems quite happy about the whole thing, and he leaves to supervise Scotland Yard's inspection of the carriage.

The inspection is a terrible disaster, as the carriage catches on fire. Not only is the vital evidence destroyed forever, but someone dies in the flames.
