So, the magic smoke came from a good ol' #RIFA cap that appears to be a combination 0.1µF Class-X (between active & neutral) and 2x4700pF Class-Y (active to ground and ground to neutral) in one package, used for filtering different modes of interference from the power line.

I'm sure that'll be easy to replace ...

... actually, it seems possible:

Kemet PZB300MC13R30 ... three pins, 0.1µF Class-X and 2x0.047µF Class-Y

I will replace the other capacitors too:

4700µF 16V
1000µF 35V
100µF 35V

And also give the power supply case a good clean. Then it'll be time to troubleshoot the machine - it *did* work at least ...
