When you just start playing Guns of Icarus, trying playing as the Engineer class at first. It's a versatile class that's easy to pick up and, more often than not, there will be another engineer on the ship to back you up while you're trying to get your "sea legs" (air legs? air-sea legs?...).

Go for preset loadout #2 or #3 (there's virtually no difference between #1 and #2 for engineering equipment) or customize your own once you become more familiar with the game.
