Greetings my beloved and destitute, I took a stab at redesigning this clip from Hades (Supergiant Games).

My overall reason for making this was to define what my skill floor/ceiling is under ideal circumstances and taking a magnifying glass to my storytelling ability with audio.

To highlight a few moments:

I really like how the Hydra came out with all of its roars and growls, lazer effects that I synthesised, and its general weight as it flies through the air. The bassy flying through the air took me waayyy longer than I thought and almost destroyed my mental tbh (ty for helping me with that @squid).

Zeus’s lightning strike came rather simply to my surprise. The moment itself is so visually impressive with all of these smooth and striking character motions that there was always something to highlight or add detail. That moment being so critical also meant that the adjacent scenes felt like figuring out a puzzle of how to lead into this moment or create a moment that is dramatically opposed in some way to this moment..

Final insight is that originally when Zag gets KO’d by the Hydra I was conflicted on how to establish a character to the moment that was expressive but did not compete with Zeus’s lightning strike. When it comes to a macro artistic decision like that I usually rely on the old saying that you can meet, exceed or subvert expectations. In this moment subversion seemed best because I had already met an expectation with the hydra’s and exceeded with Zeus (dont sue me for bias). So instead of going loud I went soft or actually quite muted. If you’ve seen The Last Jedi there’s a very obvious scene that I drew on as a reference to realise this. The scene has a stillness that feels serene despite the depicted actions on screen so that is how I figured I wanted to try something similar. I wanted to tap into an ethereal realm of muted impacts, breathy voices, ringing metal reminiscent of singing and wispy granular water.

and that’s all I have to say about that. If you read this far bless bless, and goodbye!!
