HalfLife Alyx - VR Gameplay Valve Index
Ok, that was mostly great. There's a few questionable decisions but overall, that was great. A definite must play so far but bring your big boy PC.
As I said in the video I run an i-9 9900k with a small OC, 64 GB 3733 mhz and 2x EVGA 2080Ti Hydrocopper FTW editions which come preoverclocked and I nudged them up even further. I STILL had performance issues! There's something about being around a chatty NPC and some of the particle effects that just hammer your frame rate. This is a pretty significant issue for VR titles though as it can make some sick or unable to play the game. I consider myself a VR veteran and it still makes me very uncomfortable when it happens.
This is likely due to my SLI setup so I may be in the minority here so I wont rant too much on this as it's potentially my fault and I haven't dug furter into the issue yet.
Why don't we have a sprint? Alyx moves way too slow for my tastes. It's a reasonable speed when I'm walking around a room investigating but when I'm trying to get from point A to point B, I want to haul ass twice as fast as that. I don't understand why this was omitted.
Tactical reloads!!! Why can I not use tactical reloads!? Why do I have to start a fight with one round in my magazine, knowing I'll have to reload!? There's zero reason why I shouldn't be able to swap a mag out for a fresh one. This has been video game logic for forever and I don't think it's something that needs to change unless you're building some mil sim game where rounds magically jumping into a new mag and consolidating themselves would break the simulation immersion. Tactical reloads. Give them to me!
Outside of that the game was wonderfully beautiful. Especially the NPC characters. Some of the best I've seen in VR to date. (See paragraph 2, performance issues...) The same with the environments. The large sprawling city view you open into at the start of the game was wonderful. Very detailed areas where you can play, touch and smack everything in the environment. Including the phallic growths sticking out of the wall... It was just great.
Same with the audio. Wonderful background music that was subtle but a strong mood setter. The sound effects of the world and the voice acting were also top notch. No complaints here.
The interactions with the world were overwhelming smooth. From the gravity glove grab to the reload motions. Everything felt very well designed to keep the player from fumbling about. I felt like every action I needed to do I could do even in a panic state. Great design here.
Final verdict? GO GET THIS GAME NOW! If you don't have VR... GO GET THIS GAME NOW!
