Long ago, the Forerunners believed in the Mantle of Responsibility to protect all life in the galaxy. Except the Flood. Gross. To starve the Flood, the Forerunners created the Halo Array, a series of rings that killed all organic life. To repopulate the galaxy, they kept species on shield worlds or on the Ark, the installation which created and controlled the other rings. Though the Forerunners disappeared, many species banded together as The Covenant Empire to worship them as gods..

But Forerunner relics referred to humanity as The Reclaimer for the Mantle of Responsibility. To hide this, Covenant leaders declared war on humanity. In battle, the UNSC ship Spirit of Fire discovered a fleet of Covenant controlled Forerunner Warships (and a nasty Flood outbreak), and sacrificed its slipspace drive to destroy it. Hopelessly adrift, the crew went into cryosleep.

Over time, the Covenant lie was exposed, they fell into Civil War, Master Chief was duped by his AI lady friend, and she seized control of the galaxy. But while everyone else was fighting, the Banished, vicious Covenant mercenaries, seized the Ark. Join the Spirit of Fire's crew, confused after a long frozen nap as they land on the Ark, but be careful because the Banished leader, Atriox loves two things: smashing human faces and selling used cars.
