Hands-on WinBox for 86Box v1.1.0.356 running Windows XP SP3 Voodoo 2 | Win11 | 5950X | No time-lapse
PCEM and WinBox for 86Box has unique capability to emulate classic motherboards, old sound cards, and of course 3DFX voodoo graphics cards, things VMware just bypasses. For this reason, I enjoy experimenting with these tools as a hobby.
I conducted a hands-on test of 'WinBox for 86Box' version 1.1.0.356, running Windows XP SP3 Voodoo 2 on a Windows 11 desktop, and I posted an unedited and non-time-lapsed video of my experience here. Despite having an AMD 5950X CPU and Nvidia 3080 FE with 64 Gb memory, I found that the Virtual Machine felt sluggish during the test. In my opinion, WinBox for 86Box has significant room for improvement in its development. While it may work well for Windows 98, running Windows XP with Voodoo2 in 1024x768 resolution is still slow. I plan to perform additional tests with 3DFX games and will share my findings here later.
