Hans Fuller Plays Poppy Playtime Chapter 4
I doubt anyone reads these descriptions, but just in case, know that this is just my opinion and shouldn't be taken as fact, and if you really liked this chapter that's great and blablablalblalab. Take all of what I wrote below with a grain of salt, I was kind of mad when I wrote it. I do still like this game and I am still excited for Chapter 5, I just didn't like this chapter as much as the other 3.
Poppy Playtime Chapter 4 is finally here! And it’s, it’s kinda... bad? Yeah, color me surprised. After I played chapters 1-3 for the first time last year and thought they were really good, I expected this chapter to be great like the others. But no. This chapter is bad, really bad. You know why? It’s not because of how glitchy it is. Okay, it kind of is. There are so many bugs I encountered, both in terms of gameplay, and graphics, and audio, and controls. But that’s not my main problem.
This game, in my opinion this is all my opinion, is just a series of bad segments. I didn’t feel like any were A) Well designed or B) Intuitive or C) Scary or D) Fun. It felt like everything was thrown together, like only half the capacity of how good they could actually be.
Yarnaby stealth: Awful. So slow and boring. Plus the hiding spots felt kind of buggy. And it was really inconsistent when he would and wouldn’t hear you. They released a patch after I did this part, but that doesn’t change the fact it was released in this state.
Yarnaby chases: One is 10 seconds, one is 15 seconds. They’re not setting any new standards certainly.
Experiment maze: I hated it. I swear to god, I hate mazes, especially if they’re foggy, or dark, or have a mechanic that requires you to rush like the oxygen mechanic in this game. Also, you can accidentally go back a second time and get softlocked. I don’t get how this part is supposed to be fun.
Baba Chops maze: GODAWFUL. She’s so annoying sounding. I had to mute the game, I got so annoyed. And it’s another maze in the dark. I don’t get how this part is supposed to be fun.
Doctor maze: GODAWFUL. I don’t understand this part. What causes the robots to attack you? Why should you fear the robots when they spend so much time running into walls and into corners randomly? Why can’t you plug any battery into the port you actually need? I don’t get how this part is supposed to be fun, and worse, I don’t see how a patch could even improve this part. And why is the doctor’s actual defeat so anticlimactic?
Doey fight: It was okay, just repetitive. The Catnap one was so much better.
The thing is, a lot of these sections weren’t bad because of bugs, they were just bad. I don’t know how you would fix them. You can’t fix the Baba maze, as far as I see it. You can’t fix the doctor part. I liked the prison actually, I thought that was alright at the very start, but that was only like the first 15% of the game
ANNOYING THINGS:
-The objective sound effect is SO LOUD later in the game. I swear, it must be playing every single one on top of each other as you progress. Did anyone playtest this game?
-The Doctor frequently repeats voice lines he already said, and in one case, after he had died. DID NO ONE PLAYTEST THIS GAME?
-Lots of graphical bugs and terrible lighting in some parts. Again, did they even playtest this game?
I know chapter 2 released in a really unfinished state too when it first came out, and I played it like 2 years after it came out so it was pretty good by then, but at least every part of that game was fun. This game, I really struggled to enjoy most of it. I like the plot a lot still, and all the voice actors have good performances, but I don't know. Very, very disappointed with the state they released this game in. I lost a lot of faith in Mob Games to close the pentology out on a bang. Or at least, in a game that isn't horrendously buggy. Let’s hope they don’t mess up the last one. I will still probably check it out, cause I really did like chapters 1-3.
