Legacy sequels are nothing new in today's cinematic climate. From Top Gun: Maverick to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the return to a beloved franchise after a significant time gap is often the cause for much celebration, as well as plenty of success. After almost three decades, it is one of Adam Sandler's most iconic comedy roles that is ready to receive the legacy sequel treatment, with the long-awaited return of everyone's favorite ice hockey player-turned-unlikely golfer, Happy Gilmore, now closer than ever.
Happy Gilmore 2 is scheduled for a July 25 release on Netflix and will see Sandler return to the role that many still see as one of his best. Joining Sandler in the returning cast are the likes of Julie Bowen as Virginia Vent, Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, Dennis Dugan as Doug Thompson, and Ben Stiller as Hal L., who was uncredited in the first film. They will be joined by an eye-catching supporting cast of new arrivals, including the Grammy-winner Bad Bunny and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, among others.
In anticipation of the sequel's release, both Sandler and co-star Bowen sat with Collider's Steve Weintraub to discuss all things Happy Gilmore 2. From the intricacies in the casting process to the impact of the sad passing of Carl Weathers on the story, the two uncover a range of details about the sequel, as well as discuss their favorite movie theater, and much more.
