This section takes us from Brussels to the Belgian Congo. Just the start of his journey into the Heart of Darkness. Conrad was no modern liberal, I've had to replace an offensive word he used often with the word "Native". But few writers of his time show the evils of colonialism like this novel does.

The painting is called Sunday Market on the Grand-Place (Brussels), and it is by Cornelis Christiaen Dommershuizen. It was painted in 1887. Conrad's own visit to the Belgian Congo was in 1890.
