When Hitler's troops marched into the Rhineland in October 1936, many saw it as a sign of impending war. With the carnage of WWI still fresh in their minds, the Australian people became increasingly determined to avoid fighting another distant, costly war on Britain's behalf.

Eric Campbell's Centre Party took advantage of this wave of Anglophobia, gaining massive support and winning the snap election of June 1938. From then on, Australia was set on a path of increasing militarism, ready to cast off the shackles of the British and to conquer the bountiful lands of Indonesia and Siam.
