The idea of surrendering one's self to God is typically connected with a desire to draw nearer to God in relationship, or in situations out of a person's control. Such as a bad marriage, or a friendship that has become harmful, or a child who is totally out of control, or finances and more.
The greater majority of people who say they are surrendering all to God actually do so verbally, yet moments, hours or a day later, they are back in the thick of it. They go about for years and decades of their lives thinking they are a failed case.
Still they go on trying to surrender to God over and over again, only to find that they are the furthest thing from it.They go about discouraged thinking there is something flawed or wrong with them, and feel inferior. The reason is that there is no switch that's flipped on that brings a person into an instant surrendered state.
The real surrender happens gradually, and step by step. Instead of saying surrender, it should be said it is a surrendering. It is a way that we all go, and as we go through things in life that are too hard we learn to surrender in degrees. At the same time we enter into new discoveries by the Holy Spirit. Surrendering is not instant, it is a life lived in faith and trust in God. It is a powerful maturing feature of the saints of Jesus Christ.
