Hebereke (Famicom) - Main Theme (Namco C30 WSG Cover)
26Sunsoft's 1991 Famicom action-platforming game Hebereke, known on the NES as Ufouria: The Saga, is a game I've known for quite a long while (I think I first saw it on the Wii or Wii U Virtual Console when I was a kid) but never actually played. That is until yesterday, when Sunsoft announced that the upcoming sequel Hebereke 2 will be released on March 1st. This made me finally decide to check out the beloved cult classic, which I managed to beat in about 6-7 hours. The game was fun, albeit with a few tedious things, and I think I enjoyed it more than Gimmick!, which is sort of a spiritual successor to Hebereke in a way. And of course, Sunsoft brought the thunder with some great music composed by Naoki Kodaka. I knew I had to cover the game's main theme to celebrate the anticipation of Hebereke 2, using the Namco C30 WSG via Furnace because yes. I decided to challenge myself by only using wavetables that Namco used in their pre-C30 arcade games, and I think I managed quite well with that restriction. The toughest part of this project was deciding how I would do the melody and harmonies. The easy way out would've been to just double everything to fill all 8 channels, like what I did for my song You're Goin' Down (though that used 9 channels), which is what I ended up doing for the most part. The thing to understand about wavetables is that most of them by default sound slightly quieter than standard pulse waves, so doubling usually helps to fully bring out the sound (both Namco and Konami used it extensively back then), so I ultimately didn't feel too guilty about doing so for this. Besides, I did use a mix of wavetables when doubling to produce a unique sound, which I've done in the past, and I think it turned out splendidly in the end.
