Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to TWO wads, Epic and Hell Ground. Both were authored by Alexander S., also known as Eternal, a Russian Doom mapper of significant renown in the Doom community. In a career spanning over a decade, he’s netted five Cacowards, two of which he earned for the wads that you’ll hear about today. The first one, 2007’s Epic, is a five-level mini-episode with a predominantly Egyptian theme that balances a love of adventure mapping with a penchant for striking set pieces, and plays like a love letter to 80s era action-adventure flicks. 2009’s Hell Ground, on the other hand, is a sumptuous work of gothic horror, seven levels of Lovecraft, Lewis Carroll, steampunk, Satanism, and more, always teetering on the brink of madness. These wads have absolutely nothing to do with one another, but I’ve combined them into a single episode to make it worth it for you guys, and to introduce newer players to a spectrum of Eternal’s work.
