1,230Welcome to Dean of Doom, the show where we give grades to classic and contemporary Doom wads. Why? Because ranking things is fun. Today’s episode will be dedicated to Valiant, a megawad by Skillsaw released in 2015. I run the risk of having this dubbed “The Season of Skillsaw” after the Ancient Aliens and Vanguard episodes, as well as spotlighting him in BTSX 1 and Eviternity, but frankly I could give a damn, because it’s my show, and he’s my favorite. My elevator pitch for Valiant is this: it’s the first Skillsaw wad I played, and when I finished it I said, “Well, now I have to play everything this guy has ever done,” and then I did. Well, not Hanging Gardens, that almost fried my computer, but pretty much everything else. Anyway, Valiant gets its name from the chemical weapon described by the in-game text as capable of re-wiring and re-writing genetic sequences “more times than a failed writer’s most pretentious manuscript...Only you stand in the way of a bioengineered, cybernetic apocalypse.” Valiant is known less for its plot than for its modifications to vanilla Doom’s weapons and monsters: Skillsaw’s changes are numerous, but the final product is...well, John Romero said it best.
