Quentin has a little bag that can hold up to six items, but you'll also need to carry around tools like a crowbar and screwdriver to advance. You can get rid of stuff to make room for new stuff, although I did notice a small flaw in this system.

You should first try to recall where you put them. But the problem is that if you stand on the trashed item, like I did, it can ping off in any direction and vanish entirely. I had to restart the game because I got stuck in heavy spider webbing and needed the invisible scissors to get out of it.

In any case, if you are being pursued, you will see a series of yellow triangles superimposed over your crosshair. The best course of action here is to make a quick getaway. You can safely hide, say, in a closet, once you've gotten out of your pursuer's line of sight. However, you will be pulled out immediately if you are caught jumping in.
