The puzzle box as some may know it was created by the toymaker Lemarchand around 1784. In the novella The Hellbound Heart, the box is called the Lemarchand Configuration & is described as small and black with few discerning features. Now in the film the version differs somewhat from this description. Instead of being completely black it is decorated with gold patterns and arcane shapes and scripts.
