Dear YouTube,
I write today to you today as a member of your site. While I am just one person, your users as a whole have been facing a problem that has been going on for years now. We use your site to upload and watch videos, yes, but through that we have become something more. We have become a community, a group of friends whose relations are not just limited to the watching of videos on the internet. However, there have been people lately who are taking advantage of the way YouTube is structured to meet their own ends and disrupt the community we have made for ourselves. There are people out there who are using YouTubes copyright policies to unjustly and illegally get accounts suspended on this very site. I have seen countless videos and accounts taken down from copyright claims, claims that hold no water whatsoever. A user could make a video of just themselves talking (a video that would obviously hold no copyrighted material), and it could be taken down due to copyright infringement. The people who are doing this are taking advantage of YouTubes structure to break the law, and this should not be tolerated in the slightest. It seems that any video on YouTube would automatically be taken down if someone were to file a DMCA claim on it, even if that claim was completely untrue. It seems that the easiest and most prudent way to stop this epidemic of false copyright claims is to change the copyright system on YouTube itself. Hiring someone to examine DMCA claims and see if they are true or untrue does not seem like it is an incredibly big task for you to take, especially considering the size and income YouTube has. I, as a representative of your users, humbly ask that you do something about this immense problem. Otherwise, anyone will be able to break the law to suit their own needs, and the innocent will have nothing to protect themselves.
Sincerely,
Edward Wiesen
