50The Intellivision, short for "intelligent television," is a home video game console released by Mattel Electronics in 1979. Known for its realistic sports and strategic games, it captured nearly 20% of the domestic video game market by 1981, selling over 3.75 million consoles and 20 million cartridges by 1983. At its peak, Mattel Electronics employed about 1,800 people, including 110 video game developers. In 1984, Mattel sold its video game assets to a former executive and investors, forming INTV Corporation. Game development continued until the Intellivision was discontinued in 1990.
In 2009, IGN ranked Intellivision No. 14 among the greatest video game consoles ever.
