Hexcrawling 101: Hex Features vs Sub-Hex Features or How to Spot a Feature from a Long Way Away
53In this video, I try to explain (and hopefully make sense of) distinguishing between hex features, or the sorts of features that we'd want to mark and pre-populate on our standard hex map, and sub-hex features, or the sorts of features that we either can wait to mark down or improvise on the fly when running our hex crawl.
Ultimately, think of the stuff that has import, the stuff that, from a bird’s eye view, draws attention, stuff that is rare or intriguing or special in some way, those are the things that you want to make sure to mark up on your hex map. Those are your hex features. The rest— the bits that can wait until you have time or need to fill them in— they are your sub-hex features.
My tip to gamemasters is: prep the hex features of your sandbox first. If you have time and effort and a desire to fill in more details via sub-hex features, go right ahead, but start with the big stuff and then fill in the rest at need.
Hexcrawling 101 is a series of videos exploring preparing and running hexcrawl and sandbox campaigns in a tabletop roleplaying game. Though the advice leans towards the OSR and classic D&D style of fantasy gaming, it is essentially system agnostic. If you're interesting in drawing up a hexmap and letting your players loose on it, I think you'll find some things of value here.
