An unexpected game release the developers; Tango Gameworks, dropped on us suddenly. Even more surprising, is the quality of Hi-Fi Rush. A hack 'n slash game like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, with musical rythem timing as a form of improving your attacks and your battle rewards. Of course, snappy gameplay is required for a game of this concept, and I can say proudly, the game delivers a smooth and exciting experience.
From the clear eye, you can see Hi-Fi Rush is a beautifully coloured, rendered, and stylish game, with anime influence and a intend on creating a lively, yet cold world, where machines run wild and the rich that control them, have even more power than real life. Yet, the game is full of charm. From the characters personalities, which I admit took me some time to start enjoying, to the NPCs and their dialogue, interactions with the protagonist, and themselves, and the bosses. All bring intelligent and bouncy energy to the game. From one location to another, you'll find yourself smiling and listening intently to the discussions the cast of bandits and machines have amongst themselves. The gameplay, while fun, rewarding, exciting, and buttery smooth, came second for me, personally, as I fell deeper in love with the entire cast. By time the credits were rolling, I found myself wishing for a sequel. Perhaps a Hi-Fi Rush 2 could be possible one day.
A beautiful summer game. Reminds me of Lolipop Chainsaw back at its release, and Persona 3 FES, and how, like my beloved Survival Horror genre which I feel are best played at evening on a cold Autumn day, games like Hi-Fi Rush, Lolipop Chainsaw, Persona 3, Burnout etc. are best enjoyed on beautiful, sunny, energy filled days, where you can find your day merging powerfully with the games intended atmosphere. By time the games story gets close to wrap, you're ready for dinner and a movie. The perfect day.
Hi-Fi Rush is more than I expected. I described the Tango Gameworks gem as a Hack 'n Slash, but there's a large, if not the majority amount of game time spent doing platforming, or exploring locations. If anything, the combat could be argued as underutilized, given it's more creative direction vs. the likes of Devil May Cry.
Though, I found it as a welcome direction. I adore good platformers, and breathing room between fights. So, not being met with a horde of robot enemies every 15 feet was a nice mix up.
Hi-Fi Rush is also a pretty easy game. I played on hard mode difficulty, and outside of my rythemless fingers and reactions, the difficulty was rather low. In fact, boss fights are designed in a way that checkpoints are given for each stage of their battle. Which, at first I joked about, but after realizing it was intended as a design feature, and not trying to hold my hand, it became a wise choice, as some boss fights have moments that would be a drag to repeat upon a death.
I would love to comment on the music, as it is a huge feature of the games creative process and purpose, but I played Hi-Fi Rush on streamer mode to avoid content ID claims, and that left me with, what I consider, forgettable, and repetitive songs. Some were alright, but nothing has stuck with me since I finished the game. Which is sad to sad, but I do hear some real classics are in the intended way to play.
Other features like changing clothes is also very fun, and a few cool unlockables, and when you beat the game, a Bloody Palace style game is open to play. Leading to more action, and more replay value. Plus, higher difficulties is also a choice. Making for Hi-Fi Rush's adventure to not end so soon after you complete the game.
I loved this game very much. Not up there with my Devil May Cry for Hack 'n Slash, or Crash Bandicoot for my platforming love, but it's a must own if you're remotely a fan of fun, fast paced adventures, light hearted characters, and a lovely memorable storyline, that for me, is the strongest highlight. I had a blast.
