Higg Mechanism pt1 #physics #higgs #science
The Higgs mechanism is a theoretical framework in particle physics that explains how particles acquire mass. It is an essential component of the Standard Model, which describes the fundamental particles and the forces that govern their interactions (except for gravity).
The Higgs mechanism suggests that the universe is permeated by a field called the Higgs field. Similar to other fields in physics, such as the electromagnetic field, the Higgs field exists throughout space and has a certain value at any point in space. Particles interact with this field and, as a result, acquire mass.
The Higgs field is unique in that it has a non-zero value even in empty space. When particles move through the Higgs field, they experience a resistance or drag, similar to moving through a medium like water. This drag is what we perceive as mass. The more a particle interacts with the Higgs field, the greater its mass.
The Higgs field is carried by particles called Higgs bosons
