Ancient India refers to the period in the Indian subcontinent's history that spans from the Indus Valley Civilization in the 3rd millennium BCE to the end of the Gupta Empire in the 6th century CE. This era was characterized by remarkable social, cultural, and political developments that have profoundly influenced Indian civilization to this day.

The early civilization of the Indus Valley, located in present-day Pakistan and northwest India, was one of the earliest urban societies in the world. Its cities, such as Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa, featured advanced architecture, urban planning, and sewage systems. They also had a script that has yet to be deciphered, as well as a highly developed trade network with the Middle East and Central Asia.

Around 1500 BCE, a group of Indo-European migrants known as the Aryans migrated into the Indian subcontinent and established themselves in the northern plains. They brought with them their language, Sanskrit, and a complex social hierarchy based on caste. The Vedic literature, composed in Sanskrit, describes their religion, philosophy, and social customs.
