Mulaka is the latest 3D platformer by Lienzo. The game takes place in Northern Mexico and tells the story of the Tarahumara people. This game has a beautiful art style but some of the gameplay can be lacking.

First off, there is a lot of lore to the store. The gist is that you are a Sukurúame – aka a Tarahumara shaman – who must fight back the foulness corrupting the land. There are many different names that are hard to pronounce as these are the real stories of an indigenous tribe. Part of me wishes that the text went a little slower so that I could soak it all in.

The art style in Mulaka is low poly which looks great for things that are far away. Thing like people and water up close can look a little funky. Overall I really enjoy the way the game looks.

For the most part the sound design in this game is amazing. You can hear where enemies are coming from and there are just a lot of different sounds. The music really makes you feel as if you are doing something epic at times. That said there are time when the sound can pull you out of the story like when a boss fight starts. The music for a boss fight is amazing but then the music is turned way down to show a text box teaching you more about the enemy. It really pulls you out of the game and messes with the flow.

The game starts to feel good around the second level but then after that will begin to feel repetitive. There are arena battles that happen several times in each level with multiple waves of enemies. There are a decent amount of different enemy types but the mechanic of a battle arena is used just a little too often. There is another mechanic where you must rotate rocks to get water to a fountain. This is another mechanic that is used a few too many times.

I really enjoyed turning into different animals, some of the bosses were interesting and the art style was great, but the core game mechanics were a little too repetitive for me. I think that many people will enjoy this game, but it was just not for me.

Let me know if you enjoyed the review or if there are any indie games you are looking forward to in the near future.
