Hong Kong had just recorded 80 new cases in a single day with 64 of those cases coming from a single block of the 10 000 person Amoy Gardens apartment complex.

Alarmed health officials there imposed 10 days of isolation on the block but the outbreak continued and more cases were reported in other complexes in the days to come.

This eventually prompted the evacuation of the entire complex and the isolation of residents in a holiday camp.

Later investigation revealed that the infections in the complex were likely spread through the drainage system that was malfunctioning and basically piped the contaminated air through the buildings

At this stage the cause of SARS had yet to be identified but the disease had spread to nearly 30 countries with a major outbreak in Toronto exceeding 100 suspected cases.

Things looked so alarming that the hospitals in the area were being placed on alert to begin clearing space to create isolation wards and open beds in ICUs for people needing ventilators.

Fortunately, in the end Canada only had 451 cases and 44 deaths…
